ls -l question

When you do a ls -l , the first line of output has a

total xxxxx

What is this total referring to ?
 
I believe that's the total number of disk blocks used by the files listed.
 
I believe you are correct :)

I did a du -o on a directory and a ls -l on the same directory and they results were pretty close, off by a count of 2.
