I recently asked a representative from LPI how they compare their level 2 exams to Red Hat's RHCE exam. Here's their answer...

"As an RHCE myself, I will say that it is comparable, if not more advanced.
RHCE focuses on the GUI tools and doesn't really prepare you for a machine
without X or (obviously) non RH based systems. It's really hard to give
it a concrete comparison though. If you compared written to written betwen
RHCE and ours, the RHCE written element is elementary, more of a trivia
quiz than a skills exam. Comparing skills comprension between the two
methods, some areas are exceeded by LPI and others comparable.

Understand the main difference between RHCE and LPIC-2 is that RHCE is a
product certification and LPIC is a job certification. RHCE prepares you
to use their product, LPIC evaluates your performance for a globally
defined job as a Linux sysadmin."

After recently taking the RHCE, for the most part I would agree with the statement above made by an LPI representative.

"RHCE focuses on the GUI tools and doesn't really prepare you for a machine
without X or (obviously) non RH based systems"

--> I would disagree here. During the RHCE exam, you can use whatever tools that are available on the Red Hat CDs. During the installation/configuration portion of the exam, I didn't even install the GUI. During this portion of the exam, you need to save as much time as possible so that you can complete all of your objectives in the 2.5 hours. You probably wouldn't have enough time to finish the exam using the GUI tools.

"If you compared written to written betwen
RHCE and ours, the RHCE written element is elementary"

--> This is true, the LPIC-1 written exam is harder than the written portion of the RHCE.

how tough is RHCE exam? Where can I find various sample tasks that appear on the LAB exam? Any links or resources? How tough is LPI 102 exam? What resources did you use or follow? Any suggestions?

Thanks...

The RHCE is a tough exam. Your not going to find any practice questions for the lab portion of the exam anywhere. You just have to make sure you know your stuff going into the exam. You should be very familiar with everything on the RHCE Exam Prep Guide...

You should be very familiar with the Linux boot process, including the bootloader and all of the scripts that are run during startup. You should also know how to recover a system that can't boot from Recovery Mode.

You'll need to know how to do network installs of Red Hat and how to set up all of the services listed in the exam prep guide without any documenation, except for the man pages. You'll need the full 2.5 hours for this portion of the exam so there isn't any time to search through man pages or any documenation anywhere else on the system. This is the hardest part of the exam.

The multiple choice section of the exam was a joke. It was real easy. I finished the 50 questions in less than 5 minutes.

If you have the money, it would be a good idea to take the RH300 course. At the end of the course, I pretty much already knew 97% of the stuff they taught, but the 3% that I didn't know actually turned out to be very useful on the exam and in real life.

This site has a good overview of what taking the exam is like. After taking the exam, I would say that my situation was almost exactly like he explained it.

Good luck if you decide to take it!

Thanks a lot. You have provided a very useful information to me. I am looking at both completing both LPI Level-2 and RHCE in the coming future , one after another. I can't afford the RH300 course. It is too costly for me.I think I have to spend some more hard man hours instead of that course. What are the books u followed for RHCE?

Thanks
pradeep

If your going to take the RHCE, wait until at least October (or so) when this book comes out...

All of the rest of the books are outdated. The one I used was based on a BETA pre-release copy of RH80, while I was taking the RH90 exam.

How much Linux experience do you have?

Thanks. I have over 3+ years of Linux experience that includes - working with kernel source, linux device driver development, building and customizing a small footprint of RedHat Linux OS, system management and customization, scripting, embedded linux, etc. All experience is with RedHat only. I have been working on RedHat versions from 6.2 to the latest RedHat 9.

Only thing is I didn't do the role as a Sys Admin, but performed almost the similar tasks. ok I will wait for the book you mentioed. I have this book with me - RHCE Red Hat Certified Engineer Linux Study Guide (Exam RH302), Third Edition by Michael Jang .

Do you have any suggestions for me?

Thanks,
Pradeep
