Low res pdf files

A client has sent me a series of pdf files to add to his web site. I can open them locally but once they are on the server they either start to load and report an error or don't load at all. I have checked on a number of machines and get errors with Vista, XP and Firefox. I have other PDF files on other web sites which work without errors.
Is there some sort of incompatible compression going on here or have we reached an improved version too far?

Sorry been away from the office.
Turns out that my version of Reader needed updating - all working fine now. Still beats me why they would open locally but not when served from the server.

PDF files were a good idea but it all when bad when they made them sing and dance.
