I got a strange one for ya.

I am working on a PC that Has Win-Xp & sp2. when i was 1st told about the problems. i told them to download a free Virus progy to see if that would help until i had time to fix it. they told me that they had over 200 virus detected.

yeah that's what i said...

anyway I just got time to fix it today and the OS crashes during sys start up progys. (even in safe mode)

so i went to command prompt. CP says their is no drive?
so i decided to Format. "XP-Boot CD / XP Pro" says their is no drive to formate or delete partition. but yet it boots to Xp screen and desktop then crashes.

The bios also show the drive.

also when in CP it says unable to repair disk when I try to chkdsk..

I was thinking of trying a low level format. any ideas?

Thanks,

Have you tried Fixmbr from the Recovery Console if Chkdsk /r doesn't run?

The drive manufacturer will also have free diagnostic software that can thoroughly check the condition of this drive.

266745 - Error Message When You Run fixmbr Command

153973 - Recovering NTFS Boot Sector on NTFS Partitions

"Go to look for MBRWORK in the free tolls and download it, put it on a DOS floppy (one made by formatting in XP and taking the MSDOS Startup disk option will do)".

Boot that and run MBRWORK

Use options
1 (to back up the current state, so it could be restored with 2)
3 then 4 to delete the current code and tables
there will then be a possibility of using
A
which will scan the disk for 'signatures' of partitions and rebuilt the
partition table then
5
to install standard MBR code so the disk could be booted"
