Low cost terminal printer solution needed

I'm looking for a POS solution whose only capability is to periodically dial up to a host to check for messages and print the messages on tapes at the terminal in a restaurant setting. Typical end user interaction with the POS via key pad is not necessary. This is essentially a phone line based message delivery system for the end users. I know people normally use Fax machines for this, but a dedicated device has an edge here for me.

I need this done at absolutely low cost. The traditional full-featured POS devices are out of limit for me.

Can anyone suggest what type of devices I need to look into?

Low cost solutions usuall include avalible materials. That's why you mentioned fax. I work in a variety of software environments, and i'm sure i've run across something similiar to this. Your real problem though is using a POS printer is rare in any situation except for POS. So, if someone had an application that pulls emails from a system periodically, it's unlikely it is formated to print to a POS printer. Any modification would cost money, not 1's or 5's but probably in 100's.
