Loud noise while waiting for an extension to pick up

I'm running a Starplus XTS system, and I'm having one extension which when they are called there's a heavy "jackhammer" type sound, it's not quite static... it's almost a lower pitched modem sound. The sound goes away once that extension picks up. I've attempted to change phones, and even remapped the extension to another desk, and the sound followed the extension.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Is my system dying, I know it's a very old system.

This is a known issue caused by the microphone on the station. Sometimes just removing and reseating the mic will resolve - at least temporarily. Replacing mic is a longer-term solution. We've dealt with dozens on these...

Awesome, how do I do that? I've never had to deal with phones before this system.

Reseat? Take phone apart, remove mic, blow it out, put it back exactly as you found it. This is a temporary fix.
Replace? Purchase a replacement mic, take phone apart, remove mic, solder in replacement, reinstall mic exactly as you found it.

Regarding "is my system dying" - your system has some age on it. While a solid system, folks often purchased this system based on price. The phones are relatively easy to find - sometimes cheaper in the long run to find a batch of refurbs. If you have solid power protection, the system itself will run for years. However, when you have issues, finding techs that know how to fix things will become more of an issue. And your voicemail has a hard drive that has likely been spinning for more than a decade.

Where in VA are you located? We may know a couple of good vendors in the 'hood.

I'm not sure if it is the mic on the individual phone, as when I remapped the extension to a phone that was working fine, the sound then started, like it traveled with the extension, it was a different desk, with a different phone. Only thing the same was the extension.

Just checked... my issue is following the extension, remapped the extension, had someone else that is having no issues page, and the sound was there after the first few beeps until the pagee picks up.

It's VERY unusual that a sound like that would follow the extension. When you "remap extension", are you changing cross-connects at the frame, or changing the logical extension in software? Or another way to ask, does problem remain on the physical port, regardless of logical extension number assigned to that port?
And when you "page", are you using the all-page or zone-page function, or are you instead placing an intercom call (call from one phone to another)?

I'm using [636] + Extension to remap it to another desk/phone. and doing an intercom call for testing

So long as you aren't always calling the SAME extension to test... then it's something else. But that jackhammer description is classic description of the mic issue...

Unbeknownst to me at the time, it appears that my phone was having the same issue, but given that my phone isn't used much, I didn't know this.

Looks like it probably is that I have a bunch of phones with this issue.
