Loud Hard Drive question

Our Merlin legend voicemail system (007 MLM) is acting up. The Hard drive is sometimes making a high pitch sound and voicemail stops working periodically until we reset the system.

We'd like to keep this system going for another yr or 2 before we revisit a VOIP system.

My question is what would be the most economical way to deal with the HD problem ? Our vendor will replace the whole card and reconfig the voicemail for between 3-4k. They say that our VM module is so old that any HD of that vintage would be likely to fail also.

Is replacing the whole VM the best way to go ?

Thanks,
Bill

i would look for a new vendor, you can find find dealers that will fix your HD or send you a replancmemt, look at some of the old threads

That sounds more than a bit high. You need a replacement hard drive. Unfortunately, the Legend 007 MLM has no backup capability - so the voicemail will have to be reporogrammed from scratch. You can, however, using a hyperterminal connection print the current version of how the voicemail is configured to a text file - which will help in reprogramming.

Well, from a vendor standpoint, it would make sense to replace the 007 mlm with a messaging system. it wouldn't be economical to have the replacement hard drive crash and spend hours to reprogram at our cost because it would be a warrenty issue. I have seen lots and lots of refurb equipment crash after 2 weeks...including Voicemails. I have seen new Voicemails crash after 2 weeks. If they are selling you a messaging installed for 3k, that sounds right to me..then again I am in the north east part of the US.

We have installed a large number of replacement hard drives in Legend 007 MLM's with almost no problems. Yes - the drives for the 007 are getting pretty dated and harder to come by. But I have seen more crashes of the larger, and newer hard drives in the Messaging modules - then in the 007. A laptop drive that is running 24x7 - gets a lot of wear and tear. Too bad the 007's BIOS is outdated for the newer solid-state drives. The MAJOR advantage of the newer Merlin Messaging modules is the ability to back-up everything to a PC via the LAN connection.

I have heard that a Telephone Equipment vendor in NEW YORK sells SOLID STATE HARD DRIVES as replacements for Mail Systems.

I do not know if they sell any for the MLM-007.

My position is, upgrade to a MESSAGING, those, we can get parts for.

Hi merlinman - yes - there is a vendor selling solid state drives - but alas - not for the 007. The BIOS just doesn't like them.
