Has anyone successfully moved a user from the Outlook client to the Lotus Notes client. I have used the nupgrade.exe program. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Generally I always lose the person's calendar information. Most of the time I only get some of the email.

Please help!

Partner;

Do you know where I can donwload the ulitily (nupgrade.exe) and get some instructions on how to use, the syntaxes , etc?

Tks.

When you install the Lotus Notes client on a machine, select Migration Tools as one of the options. Under Migration Tools select the mail system you are going to convert from (i.e. Microsoft Exchange). During the install DO NOT set Lotus Notes to be the default mail client or the migration won't work. (If you are already using LN, go into outlook (for example) and set it to be the default mail client). After the LN setup is complete, you can run the nupgrade.exe from the command line. Here is the command for converting from various clients:

Microsoft Outlook:

"C:\Program Files\lotus\notes\nupgrade.exe" 3

Outlook Express:
"C:\Program Files\lotus\notes\nupgrade.exe" 4

NOTE: the number at the end of the command tells the utility which program you are upgrading from. I found the list somewhere on the internet, not sure where.

I finally got the conversion to work on all my clients. Certain users with corrupted mail files were more difficult but still possible. Also, if I used 6.5 instead of 6.5.1 or 6.5.2 it seemed to go better.

If you can't find the utility, post again with contact info and I will get back with you.

Compgeek27;

So, there is no such thing as syntax? What happen if I just run the nupgrade.exe (double-clicking it)? I got an error message when I tried (Error Lauching NUPGRADE.EXE - Lauch Parameters are either missing or invalid. For usage: run 'NUPGRADE /?')...any idea?

I will try what you sent me.

Thank you so much!

The parameters that are missing are the 3 or 4 after the filename. You will have to run the program from either a command prompt or the "run" on the start menu. Somewhere you can enter the parameter.

Excellent.

I will try this.

I appreciate your help!

Partner;

I have tried this and it did not work.
Below is something I have found IBM's website, bit it is not clear to me.

Is there anything I should do before running nupgrade? Placing the PST in a particular location, renaming the PST file? etc?

Thank you Compugeek!

From the Web:
If you have already migrated the .PST file to a local archive, rename the archive or move it to another directory.
2. Create a new local replica of the mail file.
3. Change the file name of the replica to the match the eight-character file name that would be created during the migration of the .PST file. For example, if the Notes name of the user migrating an archive is Robin Rutherford, the resulting Notes archive database would have the name A_RRUTHE.NSF.
4. Run the Exchange to Notes Upgrade Wizard (nupgrade.exe 3) and migrate the .PST file into the renamed file, which is seen as an existing "archive."
5. Replicate the local "archive," (which is actually a replica of the mail file) back up to the original mail file on the server.

No, running the nupgrade should create the mail file as it says. You should now be able to go to your workspace page and open the database.

Compgeek;

Thank you for the fast reply.

How does the utility (nupgrade) know which PST file I am converting?

I have both, the nupgrade utility and the PST file into C:\notes...and I run C:\notes\nupgrade.exe 3 I dont' get any option to choose the PST to convert and get the "error launching NMSXUPGD.EXE 3 - the system cannot find the files specified" message.

tks.

The nupgrade utility looks at the default mail client. You MUST have outlook set as your default mail client. From there, any pst files listed in your "Data Files".

The first thing I would do is to make sure outlook is working properly and that it is set to be your default mail client (tools -> options). I would then make sure all of the emails you are wanting to convert are in your folder list (view -> folderlist). Since you moved the .pst file, you may get a message saying that outlook cannot find the data file. Just browse for it and keep going.

After you get outlook working, I would then run the tool again.

Compgeek;

Outlook is set correctly. I have ALL my PSTs here: (C:\Documents and Settings\lamjl\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook), which is the location for the data files from Outlook.

So, you are saying that if I run nupgrade I will then convert all my PSTs to NSF? On the location mentioned above, I have 3-4 PSTs...Will the ulitily convert all of them at once?

Also, does a user need to have Lotus Notes in order to use the nupgrade utility, or it will run at any machine?

Thank you!

Yes it will upgrade all the pst files at the same time.
It will put them all in 1 mail database, each in it's own folder (under folders).

You have to have the LN client installed and you must select the migration tools as part of the installation.

If you are still trying to do this we used a 3rd party migration tool and it worked everytime like a charm. If you are still looking I can find the name of the utility for you.

I would like to know the third party tool and the costs involved. I looked at binary tree and it was pretty pricey.

Not sure if this will help, but we used a Migration Tool from BinaryTree Inc., called CMT for Common Migration Tool. Our parent company set it up on one of our PC's, so I do not know how to do the installation.
The program worked great, and we moved around 200 users from Outlook to Notes.

Hi CompGeek-

How can I confirm if the migration tools were installed when I installed the client?

Assuming they have been - where can I find "nuupgrade" ?

Thanks,
Paras Shah

If you installed everything to the default directories, it is under C:\Program Files\lotus\notes\

Hmm... No nupgrade.exe under the path you specified. I have an nupdate.exe, but no nupgrade.exe.

Does this mean the migration tools option was not selected?

-Paras

Yes.

You will have to reinstall LN an be sure to select the migration options. They are not selected by default.

If you have any specific questions, just ask.
