I copied a large number of 123 Ver 5 data files to a CD as a means of transporting them to another computer. When I copied them from the CD to the destination computer all of the files came up with the "read only" reservation. If I load them from the CD they do not have the reservation. I've found a number of ways around this but they all require saving each file individually and there are hundreds of files involved. Is there a way to prevent this?

bfr,

Your best solution, I believe, is to use the following steps:

1) Use Windows Explorer - Right-click on Start and choose Explorer, or Hold Down the Windows key and hit "E".

2) Go to the folder where you have copied the files.

3) Right click on the folder name.

4) If all the files are contained in this ONE folder (with no sub-folders), then - Click on the first file in the folder.

5) Use <Ctrl> "A" (Hold down <Ctrl> and hit "A" - which will select ALL the files in the folder.

6) Right-click on any one of the selected files.

7) Choose "Properties"

8) Under "Attributes", de-select "Read-only"

9) Choose "Apply"

10) Choose "OK"

That should resolve your problem. HOWEVER, back to Step #4, ...IF your files happen to be in MULTIPLE folders - i.e. in various SUB-FOLDERS, then you can "De-Select" ALL the files in ALL of the "Sub-Folders", with these steps:

First an explanation... Because the FIRST folder (the folder itself, not the files within) might NOT be set as "Read-only", the folder will show up as NOT being "Read-only" even though the files within the folder and sub-folders ARE "Read-only").

Therefore, you will have to:

1) right-click on this first folder and select "Read-only"

2) Choose "Apply".

3) At this point, you will be given the option to
"Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files"
- Select this option, and choose "OK".

4) Then, for a second time, right-click on the folder and choose "Properties" - but this time De-Select "Read-only",

5) Then choose "Apply", and finally,

6) Choose "Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files", ...then "OK", and "OK" a second time.

This will then change ALL the folders, subfolders and files.

I hope you can follow the above, and I hope it's the solution you find most effective. Please advise.

Incidentally, I believe firmly (and many others do too) that the version of Lotus you are using is BY FAR the BEST VERSION - and STILL GREATLY OUT-PERFORMS not just the later Lotus versions, but ALSO the latest version of Excel.

The primary reason for its superiority, as you may know, is because the programming language of Lotus 123 version 5 is EXTREMELY POWERFUL but ALSO EASY-TO-USE (The later versions of Lotus 123 use "Lotus Script" which is VERY DIFFICULT to use, and is basically a "clone" of Microsoft's Visual Basic".

With Lotus 123 version 5's programming language, its awesome COMBINATION of "power" and "ease-of-use" effectively makes it VASTLY SUPERIOR. In addition, Lotus has FAR more effective DATABASE functionality, AND "interactivity" between ALL of its functions and its programming language - wherein one can EASILY use these various functions within the programming language - UNLIKE Microsoft Excel - which I know from first-hand experience.
