Lotus 123 (SmartSuite 97) XP Problems

I have two PCs with XP Pro. I have installed Lotus on both of them. 123 opens fine with an empty spreadsheet, and also opens fine with other spreadsheets. On one machine, opening a specific spreadsheet crashes Lotus 123. On the other system I can open it just fine. This spreadsheet has buttons and graphics in it -- looking like a form.

I have tried all the compatibility modes. I have removed all Windows Updates and most other software to see if that would help. No dice. I have reinstalled I don't know how many times, I have removed the Lotus entries from the registry, I have tried logging on as a different user. I have copied the spreadsheet in question (it is on the network) to the desktop. Absolutely no luck at all.

I really do not want to have to start from scratch on this PC -- it has AutoCAD and other important-and-difficult-to-install applications on it. I am at my wits end!

I don't know if a more current version of smartsuite would prevent the issue from occuring -- I think you can get 9.6 or 9.7 very inexpensively on ebay. 9.8 would be a little more.

I think 9.7 and 9.8 are the ones that are supposed to be compatible with xp.

I have gone from smartsuite 97 to 9.0 to 9.5 without problems so I would think 9.6 and 9.7 would open your smartsuite 97 sheets without any problem.
