Lotus 1-2-3 97 slowdowns

I have a client who has been using Lotus 1-2-3 97 Edition for quite some time (all machines are Win XP SP2, on a domain). They told me that Lotus has started running very slowly. Behavior started one week ago, and I confirmed this behavior on three machines:

- When you double-click a .123 file from "My Computer" to open it, it takes around 20 seconds to open. The status area at the bottom reads "Opening 100%" but hangs for 20 seconds.

- When you click File --> User Setup --> 1-2-3 Preferences..., and click on the "New Workbook Defaults" tab, the system freezes for 20 seconds... the other tabs are fine.

- When the workbook is open and you re-size the columns, SOMETIMES lotus hangs for 20 seconds or so, then comes back.

During these hangups, Task Manager shows the app as "Not Responding", but CPU usage is at 0%.

I figured it was something related to the network, so I copied the .123 files to my C: drive and opened them from there... same exact slowdowns.

Now here's the weird part; I restarted my computer and logged on locally (not on the domain), and opened the .123 files from my C: drive... no slowdowns! We are having no other network/server related problems, no other applications are giving problems. These .123 files don't have links, and as far as I can tell, lotus should not CARE about the network, since it's installed locally, and opening a workbook that exists locally.

Any suggestions?

Try logging on to the domain as a different user. Possibly a corrupt user profile?

The three machines were using three different user names, but it's worth a shot creating a new user profile and seeing if the behavior is the same, thanks.

Seems you are correct, DonKlein...

I tried logging on using different domain accounts on one of the computers... some worked fine, others had the slow-downs. I cannot for the life of me figure out what is different between the profiles that work and those that do not (user rights are the same, other apps are set up the same, etc.)

If anyone has any ideas of what might be mucking up some of the profiles to cause this behavior, please let me know!!!

Thanks

My speculation is that the part of the Windows Registry that resides in the user profile becomes corrupt.

Yep.

Since they need this solved immediately, I'm just going to create a dummy domain account for this user to use when he works with his Lotus files. Ultimately, they want to convert over to Excel anyway... when they are past the month of April.

Thanks for the help.
