I tried to make a new SQL Server Registration, but I had no luck for almost a week.

I went to the Client Network Utility -> Alias -> Add Server Alias -> Type the Name of the Registration, then click TCP/IP and Check the Dynamically determine port, and go back to the EM, and add the SQL Registration, but it is still no luck. It keeps saying, Reason: SQL Server does not exist ro access denied. ConnectionOpen (Connect())..

I have no ideas what should I do at this point, can anyone help please.

1. do you have an account on the SQL Server?
2. is your computer and the server with SQL Server on the same domain?
3. have you tried using the IP Address instead of the name?

I have a very similar problem to this and would like some help...

I am quite new to SQL Server so would appreciate it if you were gentle with me :)

I have a SBS 2003 box with SQL Server 200 installed on it. My client is using SQL for Sharepoint indexing but thats about it. I believe this is why it was installed, however now they want to create an SQL database.

When I open up the Enterprise Manager MMC there is a server group (standard SQL Server Group) but no servers below it.... When I try to register a new server I get the same error as eggy168. I have a test box and installed SQL Server and it's all there; Northwind etc but non of this is present on my clients server. No MSSQLserver service is present on my clients server.

Can anyone please help me get this working? I intend on using SQL Manager to create the DB but obviously without a server instance I am stuffed.

If you require anymore information please let me know.
Thanks in advance,

Simon

Simon,
I installed the sql server client again, then if it is still not working, you can to tune the client network utility by adding the IP address. However, you have to must sure the name of the server is exactly matching the IP address when you assigned the IP.
I hope it works

Simon,

You have a different issue. Some third party products create their own form of SQL Server install and the names of services, etc. may not be the same. I don't know anything about SharePoint, but it would be my guess that they 'adjusted' their install so you can't use their install for anything else SQL Server related.

Install SQL Server again (do not uninstall anything) and you will have the option to provide a name for the instance. Give it a name and then you will have two instances on your server - one for SharePoint and one for whatever else you need it for.

Thanks for your prompt responces.

Due to the fact my client has SharePoint running I am worried about simply installing SQL 2000 over the top of what is already there in case it corrupts the SharePoint stuff...

I will attempt to carry out the process on a test box and see how it goes.

Thanks for your help.
