Hi

I seem to have lost a symbol font.

As an example when I open a new application window, instead of - square X in the top right hand corner I get 3 numbers.

Could anyone please confirm

1)that it is just a font problem (it doesn't seem to affect the programs)
2) Where I can download the appropriate font.
3) How I can make the new font take effect

Many Thanks

The font which produces the small "x" in the corner of a window is not the font Symbol, but a system font called Marlett. Marlett is used by Microsoft Windows to draw scalable icons in menus.

If it is missing or corrupt, I would imagine your screen would look a right mess.

Does this fault apply to more than just the "x" in the corner?

Check in Character Map to see if both Marlett and Symbol are installed and visible.

How To Install or Remove a Font in Windows

Windows XP Fonts Overview

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.
