lost root password

I lost my Sco UNIX 5.0x root pasword. i am able to boot the system from bootable( installation ) floopy and break the installation using F8 . i mount the system hard disks on /mnt using mount command. when i tried to edit /mnt/etc/passwd file using vi command it gives error message command not found. Even i can see these files are in /mnt/bin directory.then i tried to set the PATH=/mnt/bin:/mt/usr/bin still error message is coming command not found.

please help me to resolve the problem how i can edit this file.

I've had better luck with the "chroot" method mentioned in the faq

How do I reset my root password if I forget it?
