I did NOT run the apple firmware update. I've got a Blueberry iBook with 288MB of RAM. (32 Built-in, 256 non-apple RAM) For the last month or so, I've been running 10.x (Jaguar for a week, now...), and when I booted today, top listed only 32MB of memory built-in. OS 9.1 still sees all of it it. I think I've got automatic updates on...

It's possible your chip is not fully seated.
Drop the battery out and unplug the iBook. remove the two securing catches for the iBook keyboard located above the "1" and "0" keys. Ground yourself. Pull any airport card that might be there. Remove the retaining plate by unfastening the two screws on the right. Pull the plate and snap your RAM chip out. Then back in.

If this is not the issue ....

The second thing that comes to mind is OS X compliant RAM. I know, I know, it fits, it shows up in 9.x...but some RAM just doesn't play friendly with X. I've actually HAD this issue and I called Newer Ram and ordered a new chip that was X compliant. I was saved.

Hope some of this helps.
