I have a 30Gb HD that is partioned. One of the partions (labelled "D") is 12Gb is size. I am running Windows 98.

Somehow (not sure how but that is another issue) the DOS Boot Record for D: was damaged. Norton Disk Doctor could not repair it.

Although it is 12Gb in size, it shows that only 0.4Gb is available. And I cannot access any of the rest of it.

So the first question is can I recover it somehow else???

Assuming the worst, I probably need to reformat D: but when I try to do that, the system will not allow me.

Suggestions??? I dont want to have to reformat the whole HD.

Thanks anyone for the help.

You can try a a software like Partition Magic...That should see the entire partition and be able to restore it or correct it...I have never liked Norton Disk Doctor...It has been very bugy when I have used it in the past..

You may also try running a scan disk in 98 and see if that tells you anything.

If you don't mind losing the information on it, use FDisk to remove the partition and then re-make it...
The only problem with this is FDisk might want to make it the last drive letter. If it's the first partition on that drive it's not an issue, but if it's the second or third FDisk MAY try to make it the last. (Very rare, but will happen if you don't do it all in one shot)

For your final attempt run the following:
FDISK /mbr
This will either fix it or trash it to where it is probably not recoverable
My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my knowledge.
