I too have the same problem as wjgrayson. Here is his post and the reply:

I'm using Illustrator CS / PC version.
When I go to open Illustrator Files in Windows XP, there used to be very clear icons that differientiated an ai (Illustrator File) from an Illustrator 11 eps or Legacy EPS file. Now, they're gone when I try and choose files. The files still open when I choose them, however. It's just that now the file icons have been replaced with that generic windows file/program icon.
I think I know what happened. I've gotten comfortable with CS, so I did a windows REMOVAL of Illustrator 10. Somewhere in that removal the link/icon associations must have been deleted.
Is there a way to get those icons back without reinstalling Ilustrator 10?

In Windows Explorer, right click one of your ai. files and choose Open With> and selected Illustrator CS (I think there is a check box for Always use this Program or something. Check that if there is).
All .ai files will now have the AICS icon next to them.
Repeat with an .eps or whatever other files you want."
So i did that but the 'open with' lists Illustrator CS with a generic windows icon too ... what the heck has happened? I have re-installed the software once already ...
thanks!
