How do you recover a lost desktop profile if you erroneously copied over a blank one to a good profile. Also where can I find the program files in the start menu folder that were deleted. I also had files on the desktop that are very important and need to be recovered? Is there any way to go into regedit and recover them?

It depends on what it is you coppied over??

All of the files that were in the startup menu and the dekstop acan be found in c:\documents and settings\UserName

See what System Restore can do for you.

It is also possible that any exe files that were removed by the process ended up in the then current RP folder in System Volume Information folder, the name would have been changed to something like A12345 but the icon should be recognisable. You will need to show hidden files, and system files and even known file extensions to search in that folder and also have Admin access.

Data Recovery links.

And there is always those backups you made?

Greg,

I believe what I copied over was the C:documents & settings\username --- now it is blank. When I log into this machine all I get is a screen with the recycle bin... I don't even get my computer, network neighborhood, etc... and when I go to the control panel to set these up... I never get them on the desktop? So is there anyway if I had a user who put all of his files on his desktop(don't ask me why) and the users documents&settings\username\desktop files were not deleted but copied over? How can I get these back? These files are very important and of course never backed up. Also when I go to the start Programs -- there are no programs listed... so i really messed something up but I don't want to restore the whole drive... because that isn't the issue. Any ideas anyone?

Take a look at there are loads of free data recovery tools around. Download a few and see which works for you. There is a good change you will be able to get the files back.
