on a windows server 2003, the server keeps losing it "computer name" on an inconsistent basis. When this happends, we can not view Any logs files or even open computer mgmt. Currently the work around to fix this is to "reboot" the server. after that the name reappears with no problems. Subsequently when checking the log files now, there is no error messages about this.

Has anybody every had this problem before?

Thanks
John

When you right click on My COmputer and select the Computername tab. Does it just show the computername or does it show the FQDN?

ie: server VS server.domain.com

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark

Couple of things to look at. Is there another server/PC on the network with the same name? Is DNS involved in the network? If so, are there multiple entries in the DNS with the same IP/name that are "remaining" there? Is dynamic DNS being used?

As far as the computer name goes:

when it functioning fine, it is listed as follows:
Full computer Name: Name.domain1
Domain: domain1

and the answers to the other questions:
>>Is there another server/PC on the network with the same name? Nope
>>Is DNS involved in the network? YES
>>If so, are there multiple entries in the DNS with the same IP/name that are "remaining" there? Nope
>>Is dynamic DNS being used? YES, but the Server has a static ip assigned to it

Any others ideas?

Thanks
John

Is this server multihomed, dual nic's, or multi IP's on a single interface?

A+, N+, MCSA:Messaging, MCSE
