My frontpage2002 seems to be totally confused(actually I am) as to why frontpage will erase most of the code when I copy a html page from my remote webserver to my machine for testing in frontpage. I noticed that frontpage creates folders(myweb) that have a picture of a globe on it and some don't. Also what is the relevance of where frontpage points to when creating a new web. I noticed it defaults to mydocuments/myweb.....

I have been using front page all along with no problem but now since I have been using it in with ws_ftppro, I have been having these difficulties

Some clarifications that might be helpful to you:

A folder that has the globe icon indicates that this is a "FrontPage web", in other words, FrontPage has either created this folder which contains files relevant to that "web" or FP has converted a folder you specified to open in FP by adding FP specific files to the folder. Those FP specific files are in folders that are hidden and start with names _vti. They contain data that FP needs to access and read, such as navigation data, last changed dates, etc.

If the folder is stored and accessed from FP with a physical path like c:\my documents\mywebs - FP considers this a Disk Based Web. A server based web is one that has the server extensions installed and running on and a server based web is access by FP using a URL.

Can you describe in more detail how you are copying the code you mention? It could be that you are copying web bot code, much of which doesn't display in the FP HTML view, but may in a browser using View Source.

Tiffany,

I did find out that whenever you ftp a htm page from the web server, you need to copy it to a non-web folder on the local machine. Apparently it corrupts the frontpage extensions.

I now have a problem that gives an error saying custom.css error whenever I submit a form from frontpage. Interestingly it does not do it for me but it does it for my clients on the web trying to enter info and submitting it. We are now using asp mail instead of frontpage's email routine.

If you are trying to use the FrontPage server extensions for things like the FrontPage forms, then you should never FTP your files to the server - you should use the built in FrontPage publish, which uses HTTP to publish, rather than FTP.

FTPing an HTML file isn't what causes the problem or corruption. FTPing the files to a server that has FrontPage server extensions bypasses the publishing of files that are necessary for the FrontPage server extensions to read - those files are hidden files in the _vti folders and FTP will corrupt the FrontPage server extensions if you FTP them to the server.

If you ever wanted to use the FrontPage server extensions on the server, you'd need to have them reinstalled first and then use the FP publish to transfer your files to the remote host.
