i opened outlook express and was receiving about 30 emails...on 27 out of 30, it took a long time to receive (i assumed it was a large file), then it locked so I did the ctrl + alt + del, and end task. then when i restarted it, it took about 5mins to load up and i had lost all my inbox and can no longer receive emails. please help!

First find the folder containing lots of files *.dbx. Copy the contents of this folder to a new, backup folder.

Find and then delete (or rename) Folders.DBX
Then open outlook express.
If this works you won't lose any emails or folders but you will lose a degree of customisation and folder hierachy.

If that doesn't work then try
* renaming inbox.dbx to, say, oldinbox.dbx
* AND delete folders.dbx
A new inbox will be created and you should be able to receive new emails.
You will then need to try to recover emails from the oldinbox folder.....

If that doesn't work then go a step further and delete rather than re-name inbox.dbx (you have your backup copy).

If that fails then delete all the DBX files (not the backup ones!). Outlook will create a new set of standard folders. You can then progressively bring back the deleted folders by using Windows Explorer to copy the DBX files from your backup back into the directory and deleting folders.dbx

Thanks,

Gavin

I have found a way to retrieve this information but it is difficult at best. If you are familiar with Microsoft Office Customization and Installation Wizard then create a PRF file that overwrites his original profile. The hard part is if you have never used the Office customization wizzard before Go to this link to learn how to create one.

Ok Now that you have created the PRF file you can open it with Notepad and edit Section 1 - Profile Defaults so that it overwrites the profile. This does not get rid of personall folders etc. (at least if you are on an exchange server it does not) But just cleans it up so that it opens clean. I have had this PRF file fix numerous problems with my users including the problem you describe.

This is not by any means a easy process but if you get it to work it will help you solve problems now and in the future.

Hope this helps
