on my dell vostro laptop when i use a usb mouse, sleep & hibernate functions are disabled. command attempts of powercfg -h on to reinstall hibernate fail (prt i802prt error msg). can get sleep back if i uninstall usb mouse and avoid reboot. power mgt options are not available for usb mouse. anyone been down this road?

The Hibernate option is not available in Windows Vista

This, next, is an interesting article about hibernation, with lots of links for you to check out.

How do I invoke Sleep (S3) and not Hibernate (S4) in Vista
thread1583-1492239

Any Bios Update available for this machine? Is the Bios set to use Safe Defaults? What, if any, options are available in the Bios concerning "Wake On" events?

Have you tried another mouse?

Can you clarify the exact error message you see about "prt i802prt", or was it something to do with i8042prt?

hi linney, thanks for useful links.
at the moment i have sleep/hibernate, but suspect next reboot will reverse this. i scribbled down i802prt, but will check when i reboot & if it reoccurs.

on my desktop i use standby/hibernate but on the laptop hibernate is so slow that a shut down/restart is quicker (issue with intel wireless) so sleep is invaluable.
