I'm in the process of setting up SBS 2003 R2. The server has two NICs - 1 for LAN & 1 for internet. Internet connection was working fine until today when it wouldn't see the internet. All the lights on the modem are green and steady and the connection works fine when the modem is attached to a laptop. When trying to connect to a website I get the ie error screen stating, "cannot find webpage or DNS error". I realise this could be caused by a host of things but if anyone has any ideas this desparate correspondant would love to hear from you. Thanks in anticipation.

If you have SBS Standard and not SBS Premium, it would be better for you to set your server up with a single NIC, not two. I've deployed 20+ SBS servers, and two of them have ISA and two NICs, the rest have a single NIC that only uses the internal IP. You would configure your router (you have one, right?) to forward SBS-specific traffic (ports 80, 443, 25 and 4125) to your server's internal IP, and that's about it.

If you want help troubleshooting your current situation, could you do an IPCONFIG /ALL on your server and post it here? You can alter the external address if you need to.

Thanks for that. I have SBS Premium. Ipconfig attached.

Can you note which is the internal and which is the external? I assume the one that doesn't have a default gateway is the external. Once you give it a static address (the same one you have now) and a default gateway, your internet access should return.

Your internal adapter does not need a default gateway, but your external adapter should be pointing at your router address.

Again, many thanks for that. Adapter #2 is the external one. IPconfig for this device now reads:

I still cant get to the internet with the server. Is there any clue in the fact that I can get to the internet when the router/modem is attached to my laptop?

What happens if you put the DNS of your ISP ?

Hope This Helps, PH.

Yeah, try putting your ISP's DNS address for the external adapter and keeping your own for the internal.

Can you ping an external IP address from your server right now? That would tell you whether it was a DNS issue or not.

66.51.205.100 is pingable for me.

Thanks ShackDaddy and PHV- I'm really grateful for your interest and help. I've decided to start again with a fresh install as the setup did work OK but fell over after an update. I plan to document every step to see when things go wrong. I will probably scream HELP again sometime & hope you hear. I'll post how things go. Thanks again.
