I have a PM 6.5 document created on another machine. When I try to edit it in layout mode, the format is lost causing critical layout to be lost. The style is still shown unchanged as are the character attibutes in the contol palette. I am then unable to re-format the paragraph to it's original form.
Does any-one have any suggestions of the cause, or better still, a solution?

The cause may possibly the 'compose to' printer listed in the Document Set-up. If these are different on the two computers, and if printer fonts have been used, and they are not the same on the second computer (which lists a different compose-to printer) this could explain the problem. The obvious solution here is to compose the document to the same printer (if possible). A way of preventing this in the future if you have no common printer between the computers is to compose to the same version of Distiller.

Make sure you have EXACTLY the same "Compose To" printer as the original user.

The text will not compose identically if you are using a different printer driver - either for "Compose to" purposes or for actual printing. If one of you is using a PCL driver and the other PS, or you are both using different PCL drivers, then text reflow is inevitable.

I recommend you both use "Distiller", "AdobePDF" or other Postscript printer to ensure consistent composition.

Great minds think alike.

Congrats on the Ashes.

Thanks for those 2 responses. I had thought the problem might lie there - both machchines are set to compose to screen (the default?). Do you know a reason why this approach doesn't work?

Please read the page I referred you to in my earlier reply.

Composing to the default means the document is not composing to ANYTHING!!

Many thanks John and Lyn. It's all very clear now. I've been "using" PM6.5 for many years (twice a year for an increasingly complex publication) and it's taken 'till now to encounter and deal with this problem!
Very much appreciated.
