Recently I've run into a problem on my computer where Novell suddenly just drops the connection. All the mapped drives still show but when you try to access them you get the error message saying they can't be found. At that point I actually have to restart the computer and log into Novell again. You can't even just go to Netware login and try logging in again because it just sits there and doesn't go anywhere. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Novell and the problem is still there. It seems to drop the connection at least once every hour. Has anyone run into this problem before?

Are there any errors on the server console? I presume you are doing a custom install of the NetWare Client and installing IPX (not IPX Support) - NetWare 4.11?

I'm pretty sure there is a bug in the 4.9x client that causes this type of thing to happen. Getting Novell to admit this is very tough.. it's very difficult to duplicate in a controlled environment, and I've tried to get packet traces.. but while the traces are running, the error condition never occurs.

Here is the $500 Novell Technical Support answer, assuming you've covered all other bases (speed, duplex, frame types, etc). Be sure to use it sparingly, and only on systems that have seen this drop problem.

In Client Properties -> Advanced Settings: Make the following changes:

Auto Reconnect - ON
Bad Address Cache Timeout - 0
Bad Name Server Cache Enabled - OFF
Bad Server Name Cache Timeout - 0

Reboot. Monitor closely to see if problem still occurs. IF you still have problems, call Novell and open an incident.
