Every so often, some of our users have problems getting in to Notes as it cannot find any of their settings. When we look at the notes.ini file, the line DIRECTORY=C:\NOTES\DATA loses the \DATA part and reverts to C:\NOTES. It is completely random and can even happen whilst the users are in Lotus Notes. When we add the \DATA part back, then everything works again.

We use Notes 4.6.7.

Any help / ideas would be much appreciated.

Damian.

Could it be that those users are using a PC that is shared among several profiles ?
Maybe someone modified the link by logging in on a profile that did not have the right link ?
In any case, Notes does not modify Windows links during normal use. This seems to me to be more an OS problem than a Notes problem.

The OS is usually Win 9x. We are also not using profiles so the machine is only configured for one user.

Any other ideas ???

Thanks

Hi,

Have you checked the following:

1. The registry to see if there are any wrong paths for Lotus Notes there. In the old days when Notes installed it puts some wrong paths in the registry. This did not prevent Notes from running but caused some other problems. One of these famous problems was that you needed to rename the notes.ini for example to get MS Office installed on your machine!

2. R4 is a long time ago for me, but if I am correct it also has a field in the user preferences where the local data directory can be entered. What is listed in this field?

Don't know if this will solve your problem, just some toughts.

Kind regards,
