hello all. I have a machine here running Windows ME.
Plenty of spyware on it, all of which has been dealt with except for lop.com.
I have spent all day working on it, but still the desktop will suddenly sprout icons for casino gaming, bingo, travel, card games etc, which I can't delete or move, and which clicking on calls up a website and causes a large toolbar to appear at the bottom of the screen.

I know it is lop.com and I have done all I can to get rid of it - all the usual antispyware utilities, hijack this, manual scouring of registry and files for suspicious components or entries, firefox as the default browser, etc but it still comes back. Something is calling this stuff in onto the desktop.
I have the computer on broadband.
I do not need to access the browser (IE6)to see these icons reappear on the desktop.

Have you any ideas please? I am supposed to be giving the machine back on Sunday...

best wishes to TekTips for 2005.

Some good material here:

A Google search would help you, loads of information available. This is the problem I encounter most often.

Ted! Greets, how are you? Our best wishes to you for the new year.

Thankyou for all these links,I went to the doxdesk one earlier, but they will all be very useful for future jobs I am sure.

Pleased to say that particular problem is now sorted. It might have been doxdesk that pointed me to it - someone advised peering into Application Data to see if there were any unworthies lurking in there. There were, several, and I deleted them all (with fingers crossed). The immediate result was that I could no longer get on the web, so a bit of fiddling and muttering had to be done there, and eventually, though I am not quite sure why, something or some sequence worked, and I was back on - and no more icons, no more toolbar, whoopee!

If I knew xactly what I had done I could pass it on, but I don't. Deleting folders or exes in Application Data is not risk-free, but it ( eventually) worked for me.... one happy Gracie (and Pete) signing off
