Looping extension and CO ... can't get it working ...

Hi everyone:

I'm looping ext. 18 to CO #5 because we have a user who has multiple phones that need to ring when a call comes in. I saved my instructions from the last time I did this, and here's what I've done thus far:

1. 2-pair wire between CO 5 and ext. 18.

2. #301 - all appearances removed from ext. 18.

3. #301 - CO #5 assigned to ext. 11

4. #302 - CO #5 is set to "incoming only"

5. #208 - ext. 11 is the owner of CO-5.

6. #105 - Transfer Return Rings set to 5 rings.

7. #321 - VMS cover rings set to 4 for ext. 11

My first problem is that I can't get CO #5 to light up on the set. If I push the button assigned to that CO, the Mic/HFAI and Speaker buttons come on, but no green light with the CO button. All the others light green. I'm guessing this is my first problem to solve before anything else. Any reason why it might not be showing up? If I dial 805, I'm getting a busy signal...

Thanks much!

Never mind about my ending paragraph - of course CO #5 won't light on the set because it's set to "In Only". When I had it set up before on an R6 system, both the CO and the ringing line would blink together, but when I try to dial in and test, CO #5 never blinks.

AA is set up for selector code 3 to transfer to ext. 72.

1. 2-pair wire between CO 5 and ext. 18."

I am not understanding the 1st item.

Your taking the CO 5 straight to the partner telephone? If thats the case, the phones will not indicate that line in use. Only way for the line to show up in use is to put that line into the phone system.

The customer has multiple partner phones? Or basic phones? that he needs to ring?

Sorry, rookie - not clear enough in my initial explanation - my bad. There is a simple 2-pair phone cord that connects ext. 18 to co 5 on the Partner ACS unit. That's what I did the last time I set this up ... I must be missing something small, but I can't figure out what it is.

No Problem. I have never seen a setup like this before. co 5 is for connecting a co line, door phone or paging port normally. Never seen a actual phone connected to it. I am sure someone here may have seen this before though.

This link might explain in greater detail exactly what I'm trying to do:

Tommy was a great help with this before, and it worked perfectly. The only differences between the system in my original post and this one is that I have an ACS R7 now, and instead of the PC card mail, I have a Messaging Module (R7).

make sure that extension 18 is a member of calling group 1 (#502) if you send it to group 1

If you can't be good, be good at it!

Thanks, Westi. I'm actually using group #2, and I see I forgot to post that above. I did check it, and it does say it's assigned.

What happens when you just do an intercom call to Ext. 18? - does it light up and ring at those phones that have Line 5 assigned?

Hi Tommy - I have CO 5 set to "immediate ring" and it appears on ext. 11,13 and 14. When I try to dial the extension, all of the stations are idle - nothing lights up on any of the sets. I also made sure that #617 was not set as I read that sometimes, CO5 can be used as a paging port. This is totally weird ... I went back through your instructions before and triple-checked to be sure everything is set properly, and as far as I know, everything is correct. Not sure why that CO isn't lighting up.

I also tried to change the line restriction on CO5 temporarily to make sure that I was getting an intercom dial tone. That worked, so I know that the cord is OK. Strange one!

Maybe that really isn't CO 5, or Ext. 18?

At the phones, Feature 00, press the Line 5 button, and see what the display says.

Without the Line Access restriction in place, access it from a phone (you will get Intercom dial tone), and dial a 2-digit extension number to see what shows on the display.

If those are both correct, you may not have ringing voltage at Ext. 18, test with a single line phone.

I think your problem may be the 2-pair line cord! CO#5 on the R7 ACS has the contact closure on pins 2 & 5 for paging, which may be interfering with the Partner station port signaling pair of station 18. Try using a 1-pair cord or cut the 2nd pair, and see if that works.

OK ... Had some time to try some more testing today, and here's what I have found:

1. I have two single-line analog sets that I tried to use to test. I plugged one into ext. 17 and the other into ext. 18. I tried calling ext. 18 from ext. 17 and vice versa, and there was NO ringing at the called set. If I picked up the receiver, the call was connected, but there was no ringing. A call from one of these analog sets to a digital set produced ringing at the digital set, but when I tried to call ext. 17 or 18 from the digital set, there was no ringing. I tried with one-pair and two-pair line cords, and they produced the same results.

2. I also tried to use a Cat5 patch cord to connect CO5 and ext. 18, but no dice there, either.

3. I tried an analog set in all of the other open ports, and couldn't get any ringing regardless of the extension port the phone occupied.

4. Both analog sets could access outside lines, use features and get a system dial tone.

5. Tommy, tried your suggestion and removed the restriction. Every phone that group 2 is a part of shows "Immed. Ring 05" for CO5's button assignment. If I try to use CO5 to make an intercom call, the extension rings as expected. Calls made to ext. 18 from any phone, however, do not light CO5 on any of the digital sets.

Sooooooooooooooooo ... I guess I have to figure out why these analog sets aren't ringing, and if that might be a clue as to why this calling group/CO loop isn't working either.

Thanks for the continued help.

Yup, if it doesn't ring a single line phone, it's not going to ring a CO port either.

Sounds like the ringing generator in your ACS is blown - with luck you're still under warranty!!

Thanks for the post, Tommy. I'm guessing that the digital sets have a different format for ringing, which is why they work, but the others do not? I'm guessing I'll have the same problem if I try to hook a fax machine up to the unit as well? No warranty, which is too bad. Looks like a different processor or perhaps some service work to get this one fixed.

What if I get a 012E module - will need one of those eventually anyway. Do they have their own ring generator, or do they rely on the ACS to ring single line sets?

I wanted to follow up on this post. I purchased an 012E expansion module, and am happy to report that SLT's are again ringing using this module. So, it appears that each module has its own ring generator ... fantastic!
