Is there any kind of online resource that provides things like lists of states, countries, etc that can be used when creating lookup fields in a database?

U.S. State Department or an equal institution/ state organ of your country should have the information about the official used names.

Another source might be Google Earth, or other websites about geographical data, maps etc.

Or just use a site working globally, like ebay or amazon and extract those lists out of the HTML source code of their adress entry forms.

Bye, Olaf.

United States Postal Service offers a number of lists.

It depends very much on the sector you work in. While the lists provided by the US postal service will no doubt be accurate for use within the US, different market sectors in different countries will have their own authoritiative lists.
For example, the UK academic sector (in which I work), the authoritiative lists and codes to use for returns are provided by HESA, the Higher Education Standards body. We have to use these rather than the UK govt ones.
