Hi

I work in the web team of a large organisation. We have a problem in that most of the content we get is in PDF because our content is produced for print even though all of it ends up online also.

When we get a PDF we then have to strip it to HTML, create a menu structure and multiple pages, go back to the content provider, get alt text, long descriptions etc. This is an onerous task and very resource intensive.

Our site is currently updated using Dreamweaver but we will be moving to a CMS (not yet selected) over the next year. Right now I am looking for a way to manage this process better with our content providers (who are scattered across the organisation) so that the web team is receiving content in a way we can work with faster. From doing my research it seems XML is the way to go. I’ve been looking at Metaverse and YAWC – any views on these? If I get the content in Word (and I know even this is going to be difficult) perhaps we can use one of the tools above. Can anyone think of a tool that can help the content providers and t, here’s our requirements. I’m looking for a tool that does all or most of the following:

- allows content authoring to be done in MS Word and converted to XML
- also allows authoring to be done in it's native XML form
- prompts content creators to provide alt text for images and long descriptions
- assists in the correct mark-up of tables
- supports output of valid HTML 4.01 and is compliant with WAI Level 2 Guidelines
- HTML output includes menu structure for document
- supports output to PDF (Word would be a bonus)

Does such a tool exist? Also as we will shortly be looking for a CMS can any one recommend one that does the above well?

Sorry, lots of questions.

Thanks for your help.

Word's XML output is chock full of MS proprietary tags. I don't think I'd recommend it.

1. I am unsure how anything in XML could be described as a 'proprietary tag'.

2. The XML Schema for WordML (MS name for the XML described by the schema) is readily available from the Microsoft web site, and is well documented.

tinggg you are probably looking at integrating two or more tools.
