User wants a new XP machine, two HDDs in a RAID-1 configuration. A simple setup is needed, nothing fancy or particularly fast, but looking for something which will pop up a warning in Windows, should one of the drives in the RAID fail. Machine will be kept running 24/7, and needs any failure to be advised without user having to interrogate software/hardware etc.

Any suggestions?

Suggestion:

NO onboard RAID. use a dedicated SATA RAID card, such as provided by 3ware or Adaptec, they usually have tools that run in the background that check the integrity of the RAID and will notify the Admin or who ever, either through eMail or Audio/Visual means (flashing lights, sirens, etc.)...

3DM[small]2[/small] is designed to provide continual visual
feedback for local monitoring. In the event of a
controller or disk failure, the alarm system is triggered
and events will be exported to your email
or email-capable devices. When 3DM[small]2[/small] is invoked
a configuration file is read to learn about various
server settings such as Email Relay, Port number,
etc. The server sets up the environment in anticipation
of HTTP requests and/or runs as a Logger,
extracting 3ware event messages and writing
them to files.

Many thanks Ben, that sounds useful, will look at 3ware products. Basically just want something that pops up on the screen to advise of a drive failure, but I guess an e-mail would be fine...

Look at the features for something that says "raid monitor" or something similar - a piece of software that will alert then the hardware has an issue.
