Hi friends,
I saw a vacancy for SAP Consultant. It says modules: FI/CO/PM/PP/SD/QM/WM/CS/ABAP/BASIS/BW.

I am new to SAP. But I have got long experience in software like C, C++, JAVA, Oracle, SAP, JSP etc. I am just confused to see different modules in SAP.
1. Are these modules within one SAP software or there are different software for each modules?
2. The way they have asked vacancy, do u think they are asking one person for all module or different people will be working for different modules?

I sincerely look forward for your reply.

With best regards,
Anil

Its one program, with the modules being licensed. Hence depending upon your license, you do not get certain faetures. I am also am very new to SAP.

SAP is an ERP package using a MS SQL database. The competitors are companies usch as MS Great Plains, Macola, Syspro, Epicor, Mas500, etc. I do not know what programming language it is written in, and you appear to be a developer. So I am not sure how you would fit in with a generic 'SAP' vacancy.

You need to find out if they want an ERP person, which you do not appear to be, or a developer.

Hi Anil,

let me add my ideas about SAP here. I don't know all of SAP either; I have been working in SAP Basis for a few years now.

dgillz may be corrected regarding databases; SAP uses a database to store their data, and SAP installations may be on top of various operating systems (Microsoft, Unix, ... )as well as on top of various databases. Actually most SAP installations, especially the bigger ones, use Oracle. Other databases include MS SQL, Informix, DB2, SAP DB (aka Adabas, aka Max DB).
And the biggest competitor is Oracle themselves, with their ERP software Oracle Applications. Some competitors diappeared or are going to disappear, like Baan or Peoplesoft.
For SAP users, and even for many developers, operating system and database do not matter, they needn't know it.
Most SAP customers employ developers who have to program the needs that are not covered by SAP standard, and they have to have a good understanding for the work processes in the enterprise. One single developer usually covers just one or two SAP modules. SAP programs mostly are written in ABAP/4, that is their own programming language, and a developer will need to master it. But nowadays some components are written in Java too. Programming experience with Oracle, that is the database way of thinking, will help of course.
Another job opportunity is Basis, that is SAP administration, installation and updating. For this you will need good knowledge of the underlying operating system and database too. But as dgillz wrote, you rather seem to be a developer.

As you are new to SAP, all will depend on whether an employer is looking for someone who already knows all of this business, or whether they are willing to invest in your learning. Consulting firms often seem to accept the latter.

good luck!

Thanks dglizz and honiz for the reply. Actually I used to be developer before. But I worked few years as managaer and now I have just got MBA degree as well. I am interested to work as ERP professional rather than programmer.
So I think SAP is good option for me as I have background in programming and have got understanding of business processes as well.

What do you say? Am I thinking in right way?

Waiting for your comments.

I think you have an excellent background for this type of work and that your biggest obstacle is yourself (my dad used to say that). In other words, go for it.

Where are you located? I can most likely put you in toush with some SAP professionals and what happens from there is up to you.

Hi dgillz,
Thanks for you comments and above all thanks for the encouragement.

Well! at present I am in Thailand. I am computer engineer and I hold MBA from Webster University, St.Louis, USA.

At present I am looking for new job. It will be great if u can put me in touch with some SAP professionals.

Thanks for your support dude.

With best regards,
Anil
