I need to understand the benefits and detractions for Corba. Can anyone provide me with insightful comment on why Corba is better/worse than other protocols, particularly the (HTTP or IP) and .net services.

While I have significant technical background, I am also clearly a tek idiot nowadays, so any help is appreciated.

Thanks.
Tekidiot.

Hi,
I can not understand what do you mean, detracts.
some basic concepts:
1. IP means Internet Protocol. On IP are based UDP and TCP.
2. HTTP is a TCP based protocol.
3. There is a protocol what could be based on TCP as well as UDP, called RPC. CORBA is RPC based.

4. The benefits of CORBA:
1. OS neutral
2. Language neutral
3. Is fault tolerant, Object oriented. in CORBA 3.x exists the ComponentModel.
4. Scalability
5. Easy in use

4. Unadvantages of CORBA:
1. Difficult to learn
2. Different vendors could have different interpretations of non standartized functions and services
3. A good ORB environment costs at least $400, see Borland VisiBroker and IONA orbix.
