Can you send me the latest top selling anti-virus software (free or pay) you recommend for home computer (windows 98 or higher)?

Thanks

Symantec is still the best (IMHO) for non-troublesome automated cleaning and scanning. AVG is great too, if you want to go the free route.

Mcafee has failed a few times at catching things (and their website remindes me way too much of spyware ads).

Sophos and the others are second rate to these (IMHO again).

2 of the best that I have run for a long time is either Kaspersky AVP or NOD 32
Both have caught virus's and trojans that Norton and McAfee have walked over even with the settings set to the highest detection mode that they have

I use AVG (Free version) at home, AVG (Purchased version) at work.

Very happy with both.

I had ordered the security update disk from Microsoft (free) and it came with AV software and Firewall software from a company called eTrust. The AV is free for 1 year and I think there's a 30 day trial on the Firewall (but I use Kerio for my firewall, plus a Belkin Router) The dat files update is smooth and seamless. You get an email whenever there is a new one to download. The configuration is basic, but it gets the job done. Comes with email screening also. Good Luck.

Etrust is made by Computer Associates. Everything they do is junk. Support is non-existent.

I don't like Norton because I have had a Norton virus scanner that would not let me send e-mail to my Toastmasters club because it was "too many recipients." I have also had bad rescue disks. Norton also auto-responds to viruses, which is generally a useless and wasteful process.

I haven't used McAfee since 1998. I remember it took ten months to get a rebate from them, and then the rescue disk didn't work.

I have recently tried PC-cillin from Trend Micro. It seemed like a good product. Unfortunately, the virus scanner came bundled with a firewall that crashed my PC every time I tried to print a web page. I removed the virus scanner, and the problem went away.

AVG is a very slow scanner. It also just told me that I had Nimda, but didn't remove it.

The least troublesome virus scanner I have seen over the years is F-Prot. I remember it missed a virus once. But it did fix Nimda twice. You can get a DOS-based version for free, which should scan most Windows machines. This version still only takes up three floppy disks.

I'm not sure if there are any good virus scanners out there. We use Norton at our office, and it has kept us pretty safe. Updating is working pretty well. Maybe it works well because it is running on Novell.

My eyes have been my most reliable virus scanner. It is easy to tell if an e-mail has a virus. I just look at the header information so I can notify the sender, and then I delete it.
