Hello I am looking to trace someone using an instant messenger service. I was able to record the host ip address, but as for the specific address of this person it only gives me the first 6 numbers in the ip address, is there any type of log that can be opened to view recent connections with other computers? thanks

mike

no - most PCs do not log connected IP addresses. besides, most IM programs communicate primarily through a server, rather than peer to peer, so you wouldn't find the other user's IP address anyway, just the server's.

<marc> i wonder what will happen if i press this...[pc][ul][li]please give feedback on what works / what doesn't[/li][li]need some help? how to get a better answer: faq581-3339[/li][/ul]

•how come you got only the first 2 octects?
•what kind of software are you using to get the IP?
•what kind of IM is it?
•what do you mean by:

>>I was able to record the host ip address<<

the host IP is the computer IP!

Well i'm using the AIM messenger serive, and there is a website called IMchaos that offers a tracking feature, and this is the info that it gives for a certain screen name that has been viewing my account.

When "screenname" was on an IMchaos server we gathered this information:
IP: 216.175.136.XXX
Host: 216-175-136-144.client.dsl.net

Country United States
Region Rhode Island
City West Warwick
Certainty 83
Latitude 41.7000
Longitude -71.5160
TimeZone -05:00
Is proxy false
Nationality American

I then used a trial version of cybersonar and some other program that tracks the ip address, but without the last 3 digits of the ip, I had to put in 254 or 0 and see if there was any relation to each other.

Since you have the host info, you can use "lookup" to get the IP. The information you posted for the Host it's showing the IP 216.175.136.144, however, sometimes the info you get for the host is something like:

anteldata-usainc.ips.DSL.net

lookup will show you the actual IP related to anteldata-usainc.ips.DSL.net.
