Looking for ability of background query

my question may seem simple but i don't find a solution for the moment i hope that one of you can help me.
I made a soft with a function that call a query that delete on cascade informations in lot of tables. When i apply this function the soft seems frozen.
the query is Ok but while the query occurr the system doesn't let me do a thing as long as it has not finish. I can not show a message box to inform that process goes one.

is it possible to ask Oracle 8i to execute the query in a background state to let me do other thing ? and with this way i would be able to show the user that is query is in progress.

Oracle (database) ALWAYS executes it in background, you'd better ask your client software to do it
