Looking for a personel management solution

I want to create a system that instead of managing documents, manages people, so for big companies it would handle all leave requests for example if you work for bob, who works for jim and you request leave and bob is on leave it passes the request to jim for him to approve. stuff like that. I was thinking about it and i thought, well, sharepoint does that sort of thing for documents (check-in, out, chain of authorisation etc etc) and maybe I can use it's engine to create this system.

If anyone had any feedback on that, whether it is a good idea or not, whether they know of some software that does just that, or that they could develop software that does just that, I would be very grateful for your input.
