Looking for a new host

I use Hostroute. They have British and American based servers. If you want UK hosting then it costs the same in pounds as the American hosting does in dollars, but it's still very cheap.

They're a big company and have been trading since 2000.I've found them to be very reliable, and I've always got a good response when I've put in a support ticket. They also offer a 30 day money back guarantee if you're not happy.

UK reseller prices with hostroute.co.uk:

5 sites - £90 yr
20 sites - £190 yr
50 sites - £290 yr

(for American hosting: hostroute.com. I've got the 20 site package on an American server - $190)

Each of your sites will have 20 gig bandwidth a month and 500mb of disk space and 5 mysql databases.

I'd be very careful going with any company that offers "too good to be true" packages.

Your package is basically:

20 Sites
10GB Disk Space
400GB Bandwidth

~$15.83

The only way possible that they can offer those packages is by major overselling. The bandwidth they offer on that package would cost them more than $15/month on it's own without even calculating the disk space/running costs.

They offer as much as that on the hope that the majority of users will never use anywhere near that amount of resources and you could hit problems if you ever do need to use it all.

Hope this helps,

Wullie

That's the problem I have at the moment Wullie.

I am using a very cheap host in the US but it is horribly slow.
I know a great host in the UK that will do what I want for £350, i@ve used the for years and they have never let me down. However, being strapped for cash I could do with finding something a little cheaper and it doesn't hurt to shop around!

Hostroute may be overselling, but I've only ever read positive comments about them on the web hosting forums, and if they've been running the company for 5 years and are still going strong there can't be too much wrong with their business model.

I've been with them for 2 years now and I'm delighted with the price and the service.

Nod nod... fair enough :) Have you looked at freshlookhosting.com at all? It may be suitable as well :)

Jeff, thanks for the recommendation but remember we don't run a LAMP setup. [smile]

A quick search I ran revealed negative reviews. That doesn't mean anything in itself though as people will tend to be more vocal about a problems and problems will always occur with any host. The way to tell a good host is normally how they deal with the problems.

One thing I did read about them though and it is something seriously worth considering. On their plans they don't seem to offer any upgrade options for these accounts so what are you going to do when one of your customer's accounts start getting close to their limits? It seems you would need to send them elsewhere.

A good host should grow with you and not penalise you because your sites becomes successful. The worst time possible to start moving to another host is when you are starting to get more and more visitors.

Hope this helps

Wullie

I've just had a quick email convo with them and sadly I'm not that impressed.
They won't allow me to run a simple service that I need, fair enough (HSBC hash generation program) and they're reasoning behind the decision is flawed. They aren't even willing to let me demonstrate how simple it is to set up and that it works (it's running on my current server).

They have their reasons, and I'll probably end up going with BPWeb since their support absolutely bend over backwards to help with ANYTHING and don't just dismiss it offhand.

That, and the manner of communcation is a little rough around the edges.
They could do with some marketing polish.

I'm sure you are very happy with them, but I think I'll give them a miss.

And Wullie would be top of my list if he was LAMP ;)
I've had bad experiences with IIS, though I am open to persuasion.
