Looking for a little input on upgrading from NT to 2k. Trying to decide whether to upgrade the existing Domain to be the root (forest) or to create a new root and add existing as a child.

you can do both,
but if you have already a good DNS roll out & naming infrastructure, you could just upgrade your PDC
(but first take a BDC offline so you can recover if the upgrade doesn't work)

Warning,

There is an MS bug when upgrading an NT40 PDC to Win2k that you will not find out until after you have the problem. Check out this article. Trust me, it is worth looking into ahead of time.
