I have been doing Oracle for the last several years, but most of that was version 7.3.4 in a Unix environment. Lately, I have been tasked more and more to "be the DBA" of an Oracle 8.1.6 database on an NT server. While some of my knowledge has carried over, there have been a couple of times lately where I have been reaching for straws, especially in the DBA/Tuning area. I know this is not a good thing to be doing with a production database.

I am looking for a good book(s) that should cover version 8 and the following topics:
- Installation
- Day to day management
- Fine tuning

Anyone have any recommendations? Terry M. Hoey

Hi Terry,

Oracle press books are some of the best I think. They
ran a combo deal for the 8i DBA Handbook, and 8i Complete
reference, I'm not sure if it's still available though. Although
it just skims the surface of a lot of stuff, the OCP DBA exam
guide has lots of tidbits.

Those are the only ones I have personal experience with,
there are lots to choose from at oraclepress.com

Terry,

I agree with the reply from Bob Lowell - (8i DBA Handbook, and 8i Complete Reference) are essential.

I would add a very good book on Tuning from Oracle Press and TUSC:

Oracle Performance Tuning Tips & Techniques
Oracle Press, Paperback, Published March 1999, 894 pages, orcle_prf_tng, ISBN 0078824346

You can find all of these at at 40% off most prices. Just search for Oracle.
