I am trying to detirmine if sharepoint is the way I want to go. Can someone tell me if sharepoint can do the following and how easy it is to do on these.

Documents that are restricted based on a group or by a user. I want to restrict documents where if a user doesn't have access they can't pull it up or even see it. Is that possible?

I want to have several groups of documents and restrict access to those documents. Can it be done?

Open files and make changes to those files.

Hello,

In sharepoint you do not have item level permissions possibilities i.e set user rights on specific documents. The user rights are set per Document Library or list level.
So restricting access to documents you need to set on the Library or List level (a folder within a document library is considered to be an item, so rights to such a folder is based on the rights set on the Document Library level).

In general accomplishing what you want should work with SharePoint, it all depends on how you set it up and how you chose to display certain things on a Site (or Portal)

I could probably go on and on here, but check out these links and you might find some more information:
(I have included both links to WSS and SPS)

Administrators guide for Windows SharePoint services

Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administrator's Guide

Eric's Big List Of SharePoint Links

Hope this helps you out a bit.

Thomas
