I have a table which lists items in the left column and dates in the top row. at the intersection of each item and date the cell either says scheduled or is blank. I have another worksheet which has the items and dates in it and I would like to be able to look up both value and return either scheduled or leave it blank as appropriate - is there a way of doing this?

I'd use INDEX() & MATCH().
Depending on the Date lookup range values and the Date lookup value possibility, the Match Type must be determined. But both the ROW & COLUMN offsets can be returned by MATCH.
