I have a Novell NetWare 5.0 server with Service Pack 6.0a on it.

Last Friday morning, May 10, 2002, the Long Term Cache Hits, which have always showed a consistent 98% for each of the 3 years we've had the server, were showing 66%.

During the day, I saw the Long Term Cache Hits go up above 12,000%!!! By the end of the day on Friday, the number was somewhere between 5,000% and 6,000%.

On Saturday Morning, the Long Term Cache Hits were 4%!! They are now at 71%.

There are no error messages in the System Error log. There are no abends. Original Cache Buffers: 163,250. Total Cache Buffers: 105,101. Dirty Cache Buffers keep returning to 0, and stay between 5 and 0. The LRU sitting time is currently 3 hours, 11 minutes.

I looked at Novell's knowledgebase. The only suggestion Novell has it to add RAM if the LTCH fall below 90%. It says nothing about what might caused the LTCH to go way above 100%!

We have Norton AntiVirus installed. The Virus Definitions are automatically updated every night. Every computer that logs into our network has the same Norton Antivirus installed on it. It also scans all incoming e-mail.

Does anyone have any ideas on what might have happened? Should I be concerned?

We had an issue similar to this. It was before a planned outage, after the server was reboted it was and still is ok.

Unknown cause though?? -----------------------------------------------------

Thanks for the response. I thought about downing my server and restarting it when I first saw the problem. My boss was against that, though (and he's the head of our MIS department). Since users weren't seeing any problems, he didn't want to take a chance that the server would not come back up. It's hard to argue with that. However, he did agree to let me find out who else has had the same problem and how they fixed it, so your response will definately help me!

"If in doubt, reboot it before it reboots itself ....."

"How much would the company stand to loose if the server had an unplanned outage and was out of action for an hour during the day?"

Well, they always work with my Manager ;) What do they know anyway :) -----------------------------------------------------
