I have a client who has a very strict folder structure. This can result in a file's path being within 20 or so folders. We are having issues as the file path is too long and causing the files to not open and function correctly.

Does anyone know of a work around or fix for this?

Thanks

Paul

I have a similar problem, 20 levels deep and super long file names, only solution I have found was to make the names of the folders and files shorter. If you find a solution I would like to know, but I think we fall under the path and file name character limits.

The only solution is to reduce the path.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

I kind of figured that was the only solution was to reduce the path, we have some folks that want everything on it. I guess they will learn once they have problems accessing or copying the file. One time I had to do a manual backup of a server for practice of hurricane proceedures and files and folders that are long will give you little or no hair left by the end of the day.

I used to have this problem with an engineering group i used to support. What you can do when users have problems manipulating the files is to show them how to use the SUBST command from the command prompt as follows;

SUBST X: <long path up to 254 chars)

From there they can go into explorer access drive X: (as in this case) and open/modify/delete the files.

Hope this helps.

You could create a share to a point some way down the tree, and let them point to this share?

Thanks Andy, not a great solution for us as it would mean alot of shares being created. Will probably still have to go down this route anyway.

Thanks
