Long filename error

When I try to open certain applications I get an error message that the application is not a valid Windows NT application. If I go to the registry and find the path it is displayed as follows "C:\program files\app.exe", if I edit the path to add quotes as follows ""C:\program files\app.exe"" it will open without any errors. Any ideas?
