We opperate a Windows network with one Windows 2003 domain controller and XPP workstations. I have a single user who prefers to use a Mac running OS 10.3. When this user saves files to shares on the 2003 server a strange thing happens. If the file name is over 30 characters then it is truncated to the ancient DOS 8.3 format.
Has anyone ever seen this problem before or have any idea how I can fix it?
Thanks in advance.

I deal with this issue all the time. There is a limit on filename length for windows. The only solution is to have your mac users name their files as shorter names. It is something that is very difficult to get a mac user to do, but it will save you headaches in the future. I have had issues where it actually corrupted the files and no one could use them. Also you want to make sure you don't use special characters in the file name. They also may cause some issues between MACS and windows servers. If you need to use one, use the _ (underscore). Seems to be the only one that doesn't cause issues for us.

your right. its going to be a nightmare to get him to do that :)

thanks for your help

Overall path length on Windows is 255 characters. So if he's saving to a network share, you have to look at the full path length on that machine (starting from its drive letter).
