Hey everyone,
First of all I will explain my situation. I have two seperate locations, Call them Lemon Tree and Soldiers Point. Each has a wireless netgear DG824 router installed. They are 5km as the bird flys distance apart. Although they can not physically see each other. You can find them on whereis.com.au if you need a better idea. We want to connect the two locations together via wireless. Probably using something like a 25dbi anttena. Lets also pretend there isnt any licence fees, etc. to look at. Any body have any ideas or even better, anyone done this beofre who can give me some pointers.

I'm not sure about wireless, you'd defintely need line of sight, let alone whether a high-gain antenna would work that far. I'm not sure what the current record is for distance.

Microwave would be an option - but again, you'd need line of sight. Slower speed as far as I know, but stronger signal.

Just my $0.02

I have installed many rooftop installations and in Louisville KY. I believe my record is 17.7 Mi. The secret is bonding.

Why is there never a phone in any of the phone closets?

At the frequencies used for 802.11 line of sight is a necessity so be prepared to put your routers and gear on top of some tall towers.

Another effect of the 2.4GHz band is that feed line loss is significant, hence why I say put the wireless router at the top and feed the building backbone with a fiber connection. The shorter the feed line, the less attenuation.

Best of luck!
