Hi,

I have recently installed Lone-Tar on a HP Netserver running UnixWare 7.1.1

When I created a master backup, the verification fails because there are differences between the files on tape and on disk, while the time and size remain the same.

I have tried on 2 occasions with 2 separate new tapes. I didn't note down the errors on the first tape, but the latest failure was on the file:

/usr/local/samba/var/locks/connections.tbd

Is it possible for files to change without changing the modification date, or have I got some damaged tapes?

Are there any files that I should exclude from backup?

Thanks

In answer to your question, yes it is "possible" for files to change without changing the modification date.

The file you have listed appears to be a lock file for samba, which could change if there was network activity during the backup or compare. The best thing for you to do is look at the whole list of failed compares and determine what processes might have caused the files to change.

Yes there may be files you should exclude from the backup or compare processes, but you will need to make that determination yourself. Usually you would only want to exclude temporary files or files that frequently change.
