I need to rotate a bunch of application log files regularly. Normally I just use one of my scripts to do this, but I wanted to find out if there is a standard program that the industry is using. I'm not looking for script examples as I already have one that works fine.

What are you using to accomplish this? Does Sun now have a native tool to do this automatically or do you download a freeware package? Or are you just using your own script(s)?

Thanks!

Aside from the log rotation that Linux does, I am not aware of any "industry standard" program to rotate logs. Your best bet is to roll your own - as you have done.

Starting from Solaris 9, there is a standard tool, called logadm, to rotate logs.

Just checking back in. logadm is working great! I'm going to start using it to manage all of my legacy logfiles.

I've even been able to get it to wrap files hourly if necessary. This is an undocumented feature as it says it supports daily, weekly, and monthly, but doesn't say anything about hourly. The only gotcha is that I need to run the logadm cron entry more often. This isn't a problem though.

Thanks again daFranze!

I liked the logadm very much, unfortunately there is no logadm in hp-ux, which my new company uses...
