I just started a new business not so long ago, and I had a logo designed, now what? I'm afraid to start using it or putting it online until I trademark or copyright or do whatever legal things I'm supposed to do, does anyone know what actions to take?
What country are you in. It may help with the legal side.
I believe, but don't quote me on this, but it isn't actually a requirement to register you logo to protect you rights to it (I may be very wrong).
I know in terms of other coprights, there is a basic "first created" protection. i.e if you can prove that you created the item and someone has clearly ripped it of, you are protected.
The problem is it varies from country to country. You have to be careful with copyright and patents as well as there is also the issue of the item being to generic.
It is for this reason that than Microsoft couldn't sue Lindows as the term "Windows" is a genric term and therefore the copyrights did not extend this far.
More local to me, a local Cafe called Big Macs was sued by the Fat Laden Salad company and lost.Big Mac is in fact a big guy called Mac and does not sell burgers, so there was no common link.
The area of copyright is an absoloute minefield and no doubt you will hear massive varying degrees of advice on this forum.
Good luck with your business.
Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.

The US Patent office is actually the "Patent and Trademark Office."
The graphic itself you automatically have copyright on. o protect the business uses of trademark or service mark you have to register it. (And search to make sure you're not violating someone elses's mark.)
